When installing new flooring in your home, you might be presented with flooring options that seem very similar. One of the most common flooring mix-ups happens between vinyl and linoleum flooring. Many customers have a hard time distinguishing the difference between them as they do look similar in many cases. Read on to learn more about the difference between linoleum and vinyl flooring to help you make an informed decision when choosing the best flooring for your home.

What is Linoleum Flooring?

Linoleum flooring is usually made from a mix of renewable materials such as linseed oil, limestone, cork powder, jute, wood flours and tree resin. It has grown very popular amongst homeowners as it is manufactured with all-natural materials and doesn’t emit harmful chemicals. Since it’s manufactured using a mixture of materials, it is one of the most durable flooring options for high-traffic areas. Depending on the manufacturer, linoleum flooring can come in several different colours. Pigments are often added to the mixture to create different finish colours and create different textures.

What is Vinyl Flooring?

Vinyl flooring is another popular flooring option amongst homeowners. Unlike linoleum, vinyl flooring is made from synthetic polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is manufactured from several layers of different synthetic materials adhered together to form a durable and affordable flooring option. There are two main types of vinyl flooring; luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) and vinyl roll. They are both made from the same materials; however, they are manufactured using different methods.

What’s The Difference Between Vinyl and Linoleum Flooring?

Water Resistance

Many people tend to mix up linoleum and vinyl flooring as they look very similar and share similar features; however, they are pretty different when it comes to functionality. If you’re thinking of renewing your bathroom, kitchen or mudroom, vinyl flooring is a much safer option than linoleum flooring. Since linoleum is made from renewable materials, including cork and wood, it becomes more susceptible to water damage than vinyl flooring. For high-moisture areas in your home, vinyl flooring will probably be the better choice.

Maintenance

While both vinyl and linoleum flooring are made from very different materials, they both require minimal maintenance and upkeep. You don’t need any special cleaning tools or detergents to keep your flooring spotless; you will only need the occasional damp mop to sweep up all the dirt and a dry microfiber towel to dry up any water residue. Vinyl and linoleum are resilient in high-traffic areas and less likely to be damaged permanently by footwear and day-to-day wear and tear.

Design and Style

If you’re looking for flooring options that replicate the realistic look of natural stone, wood grain or tile, you should consider vinyl flooring. Given that vinyl is manufactured using synthetic materials, flooring brands have more freedom to create more designs and produce a variety of patterns. Linoleum flooring will be a better option if you’re not necessarily worried about design or style. Unlike vinyl flooring, linoleum comes in standard colour options and designs that cannot offer you natural stone or tile patterns.
