Tips on Cleaning Your Flooring This Spring!

As winter bids us its final farewell, it’s time to spruce up your floors for spring! During Edmonton’s harsh winter months, your flooring endures extra wear and tear because of salt, snow and extra moisture that makes its way into your home. Below are a few cleaning tips you can do this spring to keep your floors shiny and clean!

Tips on Cleaning Vinyl Flooring

Similar to cleaning laminate flooring, vinyl flooring should be cleaned using a soft microfibre mop. Although luxury vinyl flooring is considered to be very durable, it’s best to avoid using abrasive cleaning pads or a vacuum as they can scratch its protective wear layer. When deep cleaning your vinyl flooring, you can use a wet mop with a neutral pH cleaning solution to remove any stains and disinfect the flooring since most vinyl flooring is waterproof. Go over the floors again with warm and clean water to remove any residue left behind from the cleaning solution but make sure the water you’re using isn’t too hot, as it can damage vinyl flooring.

Tip: Remember to always wipe away water or residue with a dry clean microfibre towel!

Tips on Cleaning Tile Flooring

A general rule of thumb when cleaning any flooring is to start off by clearing away any dirt, debris or dust bunnies. While many recommend you use a vacuum to clean your flooring, with tile flooring, it’s best to sweep up dirt using a microfiber mop. One great advantage of tile flooring is that it’s almost fully waterproof, allowing you to easily use a wet mop to remove stains. With that said, there are two types of tile flooring, and each requires different deep cleaning methods:

  • Glazed Tile Flooring

With glazed tile flooring, you can mop the floor using a mixture of vinegar and water to remove any stains without allowing the water to stand or pool. After you’ve attended to all the stains, re-mop the floor using hot water and wipe the floor dry.

  • Unglazed Tile Flooring

With unglazed tile flooring, it’s recommended that you mop the floor using the same mixture of vinegar and water (or a neutral pH cleaning solution), saturate the floors and let it soak for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse the floor thoroughly with clean hot water and then wipe it dry.

Tip: In high-traffic and high-moisture areas like bathrooms and kitchens, the tile’s grout can get pretty dirty, so during your deep cleaning routine, don’t forget to clean your grout! Use a mixture of equal parts water and baking soda and scrub the grout using a small brush to keep it clean.
